The LECO C230 Carbon Determiner is a microprocessor-based, software-controlled instrument for measuring the carbon and sulfur content in metals, ores, ceramics, and other inorganic materials. The C230 uses an induction furnace and measures carbon via infrared absorption.

The infrared (IR) source consists of a nichrome wire heated by resistance up to 8,500 °C. The IR source emits visible energy as well as all wavelengths of the infrared spectrum. The initial reference level or baseline for the detector is set by passing oxygen through the cell to remove any remaining atmospheric gases.
